The Russo Brothers on doing Captain America’s time travel story
By Ariba Bhuvad
The Russo Brothers left us with a lot to think about at the end of Avengers: Endgame, especially when it comes to Captain America. We won’t ever forget that after taking on the task after returning all the Infinity Stones, Cap decided to stay in the past and live the life he had always wanted.
When we saw him again, he was an elderly man that had lived a life worth talking about, and one that he would have never traded for the world. But have you ever wondered what Cap’s adventures during that trip were like? It’s something I think about from time to time, and like many others, I imagine action, drama, and a life full of love and fulfillment.
I have always had a soft spot in my heart for dear ‘ol Cap, and seeing him at the end of Avengers: Endgame made me want to so desperately see what his life had been like leading up to that very moment.
Well, I’m not sure we’ll ever get to know what that story was or if we’ll ever get to see it in some shape or form, whether that’s through comics, movies, or a Disney+ show. During an interview with ComicBookMovie.com, the Russo Brothers were asked whether or not they would ever return to tell Cap’s time travel story.
"It would be a great story to tell, no question. I don’t know whether it needs to be told, but it would be a great story to tell, and we’d love to tell it, but I think there are other stories to move on to now."
I suppose Joe Russo is right about the whole “other stories to move on to” angle, but still wouldn’t you love to see it?! I know I would.
But while I would love to see what Captain America’s journey was like when he traveled back in time, there is a bittersweet beauty about the way the Russo Brothers wrapped up his story. Sure, there’s the whole debate of how they portrayed time travel, but removing that, credit should be given to the way they presented Cap’s farewell.
Plus, the writers of Avengers: Endgame, Christopher McFeely and Stephen Markus have already explained that angle of time travel for the skeptics out there. So, let’s just let the Cap be, shall we?
"We are not experts on time travel, but the Ancient One specifically states that when you take an Infinity Stone out of a timeline it creates a new timeline. So Steve going back and just being there would not create a new timeline. So I reject the ‘Steve is in an alternate reality’ theory. I do believe that there is simply a period in world history from about ’48 to now where there are two Steve Rogers. And anyway, for a large chunk of that one of them is frozen in ice. So it’s not like they’d be running into each other."
I’m totally picking up what they’re throwing down there. Sometimes things don’t need to be so complicated that we forget to enjoy the story at hand. And as for the events that led him to live that life of 112 years, I hope we do get to see it someday. I don’t really care what platform it happens on, but if the Russo Brothers can make it happen–that would be absolutely wonderful.
