7. Narnia, from The Chronicles of Narnia

The Chronicles of Narnia is a high fantasy story with a bit more whimsy than most, an enchanting portal full of magic, mythical beasts, and splendid delights. Drawing on his his Christian faith, author C.S. Lewis had a wealth of ideas and stories to take inspiration from that helped him bring Narnia to life. Nothing beats a fantasy with talking animals, and this world has plenty of those.

The depth and variety of cultures, rituals, creatures and locales are all amazing, with a rich mythology underpinning it all. The fantasy series has provided an escape for children — both fictional and real — for over half a century. There are centaurs, fauns, and a wise and magnificent Lion named Aslan to greet them when they arrive.

Whether it’s the darkness of the White Witch’s castle or the shining grandeur of Cair Paravel, Narnia has become one of the world’s most beloved fantasy universes. Although Lewis is writing for children, Narnia has a dark side, too, with wicked dwarves, hags, and minotaurs all serving the White Witch.

The most famous of the stories set in this world is The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, which was the first book Lewis wrote in the series. Visit a land where it’s always winter but never Christmas, and learn what can be done about that.
