“Michael causes some havoc” on Lucifer season 5 before getting found out
By Dan Selcke
Lucifer is coming back for season 5…only it’s not really Lucifer. What’s the imposter’s agenda, does the team find him out, and when does the genuine article return?
After what seemed like an eternity of waiting, Netflix finally confirmed that the fifth season of Lucifer would be coming next month, and that it was full of twists. When last we left the show, Lucifer (Tom Ellis) had left Los Angeles to go back to Hell. He returns in season 5, much to the surprise of the people he’d left behind, but he’s not quite himself:
In fact, Lucifer isn’t even Lucifer. He’s Michael, Lucifer’s evil twin brother…well, more evil twin brother. Star Aimee Garcia (Ella Lopez) enthused about the twist to Entertainment Tonight. “It’s one of those things where you always expect a big bad to come in from an outside source, a new guest star, but to have our headliner also be the big bad?! … It’s a big mind F,” she said, “but it’s also true to the biblical story… It’s such a brilliant move that no one saw coming, including ourselves.”
I dunno exactly what biblical story she’s referencing there, but pulling the old “evil twin” is indeed a new development for the show.

D.B. Woodside, who plays Lucifer’s other brother Amenadial, confirmed that the group won’t figure out that Lucifer isn’t Lucifer until partway through the season. Indeed, it’s Amenadial who puts the pieces together first. “Amenadial’s not a fan of Michael’s at all,” Woodside said. “I think it’s safe to say Amenadial prefers Lucifer over Michael.”
That means plenty of juicy conflict on the way for us. “Michael causes some havoc… a considerable amount of drama. So it’s gonna be fun,” Woodside said. “Michael has an agenda. And, it’s gonna take us a little while before we realize what his agenda really is. But his agenda is extremely dangerous. And it’s gonna take the entire family to disrupt Michael’s agenda.”
But before that happens, the characters are going to have realize they’re dealing with a fake in the first place. For Ella, that might be hard, because she’s still “so pissed” that Lucifer left L.A. in the first place. “She is so upset that she may or may not be taking off her shoe and hitting him over and over again in his chest. I cannot confirm nor deny, but poor Tom did take a beating,” Lopez said. “Tom’s like, ‘OK, I don’t think the camera’s on me. Maybe we don’t have to,’ because I really went for it. So Ella’s very upset. Ella feels really betrayed.”
"Ella sees Lucifer like her older brother and to just have him peace out like that — she’s like his little buddy — so she feels really upset about it. She really is like his younger sister and when he just skips town she is just so mad! But as we know about Ella, she wears her heart and emotion on her sleeve, so she let you know and she may or may not have left a couple of bruises. I know Lucifer heals fast, but there were still some bruises from Ella’s new shoe on his chest, which we shall see in season 5."
She’d probably hit him even harder if she knew it was really Michael in disguise.
And yes, if you’re wondering, the real Lucifer will eventually return, although apparently he’ll be a little worse for wear. “[H]undreds of years have passed, I believe,” Woodside said. “And so being down in Hell for that long, I think it really, really affects a person.”
Lucifer season 5 premieres on Netflix on August 21! We’ll get the first eight episodes to start, with the back half of the season coming at a later time.
