Looking forward to watching more Star Wars movies, Avatar sequels, and Disney live-action remakes? Well, you CAN’T. Or at least not for a while.
If you haven’t noticed, the coronavirus is still spreading around the world, particularly in the United States. Movie theaters reopening are the last thing on a lot of people’s minds.
This means that all the summer blockbusters we would have been watching right now have been pushed back, and now, all the blockbusters we were going to watch over the next couple of years are getting delayed, too. And where do most of the blockbusters come from? Disney.
Yes, the House of Mouse has shuffled its scheduled, and pretty much all of its big tentpole releases are getting kicked down the road. To start, James Cameron’s network of Avatar sequels aren’t going to start until December 16, 2022, when Avatar 2 takes us back to the world of Pandora. Then it’s Avatar 3 on December 20, 2014; Avatar 4 on December 18, 2026; and Avatar 5 on December 22, 2028.
Did anybody want more Avatar sequels? That’s another question entirely, but if you did, you’re going to have to wait longer to see them. Cameron even wrote a letter about it:
Then there are the new upcoming Star Wars movies. The first hits on on December 22, 2023; the second on December 19, 2025; and the third on December 17, 2027.
Looks like we’ll be alternating between Star Wars and Avatar movies for a while. One way or another, Disney will have your holiday spending money. We know nothing about these movies except that Taika Waititi is directing one of them. Honestly, I’m not sure anyone knows what they’re going to be yet. The important thing is that star war.
Finally, the live-action remake of Mulan has been removed from Disney’s schedule entirely. If everything had gone as planned, we would have seen this movie on March 9. Everything did not go as planned.
There’s still some Disney stuff coming out this year. Marvel’s Black Widow is scheduled for November 6, Pixar’s Soul comes out on November 20, Ryan Reynolds’ video game action flick Free Guy is set for December 11, and Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story remake is slated for December 18.
I mean, for now.
