Clark Gregg wants Agent Coulson to reunite with the Avengers
By Dan Selcke
Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. only has a few episodes left. Is there time for Phil Coulson to see the Avengers again? Also, the director talks through last night’s heartbreaking death.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe gets all the press, what with Avengers: Endgame being the most profitable movie in all of history, but all the while, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been quietly humming along on ABC, earning a fanbase all its own as it explores lesser-known corners of the MCU.
At the head of the show is Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson, who was in the MCU movies until his character died in the first Avengers film. So far as we know, neither Captain America, Iron Man nor any of the other heroes we’ve come to know are aware that he was revived and running his own show.
Coulson did come back for Captain Marvel, but that was set years before The Avengers. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is now in its final season, and time is running out for a proper reunion. Speaking to ComicBook.com, Gregg mulled over which Avenger he’d most like to work with again:
"Well, I mean, you know, the crush on Cap never dies. But I always, I mean, I felt that same sadness, just because really, the whole thing started, and I think the reason Coulson became what Coulson was really, was about Robert [Downey Jr.] and those scenes together and the repartee. He makes you that much better and brings out so much more than you might normally see in a scene. The way that he took those scenes and that character on, brought me to life, in a way, so that I didn’t get to have that."
You’d figure Coulson could have appeared in Avengers: Endgame, maybe during the final battle against Thanos or at Tony Stark’s funeral. But maybe they didn’t want to take time to explain to moviegoers who hadn’t been watching Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. how he was back, not to mention processing the Avengers’ surprise. But Gregg has other ideas of how the characters could get back together. “I was like, ‘Come on, you haven’t done a one-shot,'” he said. “Why couldn’t there be a really cool one-shot where they’re on a mission, we’re on a mission… ‘Oops!’ You know?”
Maybe something on Disney+? It should be easy enough to sneak Coulson into one of the several Marvel shows coming.
MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. – “As I Have Always Been” – A time storm ravages the Zephyr, propelling it toward destruction while simultaneously forcing Daisy and Coulson to relive their failed attempts to save the team over and over, until they find a solution or are swallowed by the storm. Making it to their next destination will take trust, courage and sacrifice from everyone on board, but it will all come down to having enough time on “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” airing WEDNESDAY, JULY 22 (10:00-11:00 p.m. EDT), on ABC. – (ABC/Mitch Haaseth)
JOEL STOFFER
Meanwhile, last night’s new episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. featured — SPOILERS INCOMING — the death of a beloved character. Enoch (Joel Stoffer), a Chronicom who had switched sides to fight with the good guys, sacrificed himself by removing his “heart,” which was the only way to get the team out of a time loop they were stuck in.
Elizabeth Henstridge, who directed “As I Have Always Been” talked to SyFy Wire about the emotion the performers brought to Enoch’s death scene. “Joel Stoffer is just such a brilliant actor he really did those moments justice, and it was really important to me we earned that moment of stillness at the end to really let that moment sit, and be uncomfortable and sad and beautiful,” she said. “It was so beautifully written by Drew Greenberg and just incredible, and really allowed Coulson and Daisy to have some really wonderful moments as well, and that scene was so significant between those three characters. It allowed Coulson and Daisy to talk about and realize the other person’s point of view, and other person’s pain.”
Speaking of Daisy (Chloe Bennet), she struck up a romance with newcomer Agent Sousa (Enver Gjokaj), kissing him during one of the time reboots. Henstridge was always a fan of that particular ship, so she was happy to help it set sail.
“Both Enver and Chloe are so professional and you take care during any kind of intimate scene to make sure everyone is comfortable, but they were both so wonderful and excited for their characters to have a bit of a romance,” Henstridge said. “It’s a brilliant thing about doing a time loop episode because you can get such great character development that feels authentic in such a short space of time. At the start of the episode they were relative strangers, and by the end of it they kind of see each other in a different light and have been through so much, even though it’s only been a day. It feels earned.”
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. only has a few episodes left before it’s over forever. It airs Wednesday nights on ABC.
