Once again, Outlander is completely shut out from the Emmy nominations, making us wonder: what in the world is going on??
Outlander season 5 was a spectacular collection of episodes featuring some excellent work from Sam Heughan (Jamie), Caitriona Balfe (Claire), Sophie Skelton (Brianna) and Richard Rankin (Roger). But unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to snag the attention of the Emmy voters, as Outlander didn’t get a single nomination for the 2020 ceremony.
This isn’t the first time this has happened, and it’s quite disappointing. Outlander season 5 dove deep into the psyche of each of its central characters, and turned out some phenomenal moments.
For some reason, the Emmys refuse to acknowledge Outlander for the groundbreaking show it is. Instead, the Golden Globes have taken notice of the series and its cast members, nominating Caitriona Balfe in the category of “Best Performance by an Actress In A Television Series – Drama” several times over the past four years.
So why do the Emmys not see what everyone else does? It is because the Outstanding Drama Series category is always so stacked? Let’s take a look at this year’s nominees and see what feelings arise:
- Better Call Saul
- The Crown
- The Handmaid’s Tale
- Killing Eve
- The Mandalorian
- Ozark
- Stranger Things
- Succession
Come on Emmy voters, Stranger Things over Outlander? I mean, I LOVE Stranger Things, but it was not better than this previous season of Outlander. Same goes for The Mandalorian. I enjoyed it, but again, it wasn’t better, by any means. At least according to me, anyway.
I find all this to be completely unfair and a complete disregard for the incredible season we got this year. Outlander dove into sensitive, serious topics that required the cast members to dig deep, which I think deserves more recognition. Between Brianna’s rape, Claire’s assault, Jamie’s near-death experience, losing Murtagh, and Roger’s PTSD, Outlander season 5 left no stone unturned.
It’s truly disappointing to see not a single cast member receive any recognition. And it wasn’t just them. The show didn’t get any nominations for writing or directing either, nor for makeup, hairstyles, costumes, or editing. Between the Primetime Emmys and the Creative Arts Emmys, there should have been some recognition. But zero, zilch, nada.
This is a snub through and through, and unfortunately, it’s not the first time and it may not be the last. But I’m hoping Sassanechs all around the world will continue to give their love and dedication to the series because it deserves all the attention in the world.
