A Song of Ice and Fire calendar features book version of infamous Game of Thrones scene
By Dan Selcke
One of the beautiful images from the 2021 A Song of Ice and Fire calendar depicts a book version of a haunting scene we saw on HBO’s Game of Thrones.
The Song of Ice and Fire calendars have always been beautiful. Every year, Penguin Random House finds a talented artist to render scenes from George R.R. Martin’s epic trilogy, and every year, I’m always impressed with their interpretations. Plus, with a series this long, there’s a ton of potential moments to choose, and with the 2021 edition, we get some we haven’t seen before.
The 2021 calendar is illustrated by talented fantasy artist Sam Hogg, who painted each scene in oils on canvases of at least 20 by 20 inches. We’ve known about the cover for a while: it’s poor Quentyn Martell, trying to release Daenerys’ dragons from under Meereen and finding he bit off a bit more than he could chew.

Oh, Quentyn, you dumb dummy.
Penguin Random House has released art from another month: this is a rendering of a typical day at Chataya’s, Tyrion Lannister’s preferred King’s Landing brothel:

And now, Hogg herself has revealed a new image on Twitter. This one is her favorite, a painting of Theon Greyjoy giving away “Arya Stark” at her wedding to Ramsay Bolton in the godswood at Winterfell:

Yeah, I’m gonna have to agree that this image is surpassingly lovely…and also creepy.
This scene did happen on HBO’s Game of Thrones, but with a twist. In the books, the girl Theon gives away is actually Jeyne Poole, a friend of Sansa’s. She’s only posing as Arya Stark so Ramsay can be said to marry into the Stark family. On Game of Thrones, the real Sansa is there.
It’s a haunting scene on the show, too, and I love the way the beauty of the falling snow clashes with the horror and artifice of what’s happening. Also, all those crows: Bran, are you watching this?

Anyway, you can buy the calendar for $18 on the Penguin Random House website. The calendar features 13 illustrations in all, including a fold-out poster. It contains Hogg also mentions that she’ll be getting in some prints she can sign and make available for purchase. More on that later.
