The Walking Dead boss teases tension between Maggie and Negan

The last time Maggie was on The Walking Dead, Negan was in prison after murdering her husband. Now he’s out and burnt down her home. So…how’s things?

By now, most fans know that Lauren Cohan (Maggie) will return to The Walking Dead in the upcoming season 10 finale, and return to her role as a series regular going forward. And that’s going to be interesting, because when Maggie left the group, Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) was still in prison.

What will make Maggie make of Negan’s new role within the community? Showrunner Angela Kang teased what fans can expect when the two characters cross paths again during the show’s panel at Comic-Con@Home.

“Negan killed Maggie’s husband [Glenn] and burnt down her house, so it’s not gonna be an easy road, I think, for either of them,” Kang said, showing off her talent for understatement. “Negan’s been on this whole other journey while she’s been gone but it’s sort of like Maggie’s coming in and she hasn’t seen any of that.”

It’s true that, in the time that Maggie’s been gone, Negan has transformed himself into a different person. He’s still not perfect, but he’s making great strides toward improving himself. But then again, you don’t just brush off the murder of your husband, and it’s going to be a shock when Maggie sees the burned husk of the Hilltop, for which Negan is partly to blame. “What [Maggie] knows is she comes back and Hilltop is destroyed and the guy that she thought she left to rot in prison is out walking around with everybody else,” Kang said.

Sounds like things could get awkward at best and violent at worst. “I think these two have to figure out how to occupy the same space so it will hopefully be really fun [with] these two amazing actors,” Kang said. “We’ll try to write to their amazing abilities and we’ll see what happens.”

Will Maggie and Negan find a way to remain civil? Will all hell break loose between them? We’re going to have to wait and see what happens when the show comes back for its season finale on October 4, and then in the six additional episodes of season 10 airing early next year!
