9. Episode 107, “The Wedding”: Jamie and Claire awkwardly consummate their relationship
Shout-out to Sam Heughan for conveying matrimonial jitters in this season 1 episode. Like a nervous teenager, Jamie struggles to figure out how this whole “consummation” thing works as he and Claire kick off their wedding night.
He’s a virgin going into this and has no idea what he’s supposed to be doing. Claire is very sweet about the whole thing, but it’s an awkward situation, with the two of them getting married to protect Claire from the British, and yet they have to consummate it to make it legal. Take about pressure!
Despite the awkwarness, the intimacy of the scene is very touching. It’s beautiful, natural, and raw, with both Heughan and Caitriona Balfe doing it justice. This is one of the first times we really get an idea of how strong the connection is between these two characters. It’s not just one of Heughan’s best moments as Jamie, but one of Outlander’s best intimate moments, period.
