3. Episode 206, “Best Laid Schemes”: Jamie duels Blackjack Randall
Watching Blackjack Randall brutally torture Jamie during “Wentworth Prison” is forever seared into our minds. It’s one of the saddest, most jarring, and most shocking moments on Outlander, which is why it’s so satisfying to watch “Best Laid Schemes” and watch justice be served…sort of.
After coming face-to-face with Blackjack Randall for the first time since the assault, Jamie is definitely in his feelings, and we didn’t blame him. When the opportunity to duel Blackjack Randall arises, we all understood why Jamie would want to take it.
Sam Heughan gives a ferocious performance in this episode. From the way he looks at Blackjack Randall with anger in his eyes to how he goes forward with the duel despite Claire’s concerns, there’s something different about him in this one.
It doesn’t end well for Jamie, of course, as he is carted off to prison for participating in a duel at all. But even if it was just for a fleeting moment, Jamie felt vindicated, and Heughan sold us on why he would act as he did, even if it wasn’t the wisest course of action.
