Discover what the Starfleet logo looks like 900 years into Star Trek’s future
By Dan Selcke
The Starfleet logo is iconic, but nearly a millennium into the future of Star Trek, even it’s undergone a bit of a redesign.
First debuting in Star Trek: The Original Series over 50 years ago, the Starfleet logo is pretty well-known, with the familiar delta symbol adorning the chests of many an officer in many a Trek show over the years.
But in the upcoming season of Star Trek: Discovery, things have changed. “We jumped to the future at the end of season two,” Doug Jones (Commander Saru) reminded ComicBook.com. “This is a big deal. We’ve boldly gone where no Star Trek series has gone before.”
"So we’re going to see what happens in the future. What condition is the Federation in? We’re going to find out when we land. What happens to me and my rank? I’m a Commander, but I’m also acting Captain of the ship because we lost all our captains now. I take the ship, and so, do I get to keep the Captain’s chair? Do I have to give it away to another Federation/Starfleet captain in the future? We’re going to find out all that when we get there."
From what we can tell, it seems like, a millennium into the future, Starfleet isn’t quite the powerhouse organization it once was. The 32nd century has some issues, but we’ll find out more when Discovery season 3 premieres on October 15.
One thing we can say for sure, though, is that Starfleet changed its logo at some point in the last nine centuries. In a new promotional image, Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) is wearing a new Starfleet insignia that looks more like an oval with the original insignia inside it:
Honestly, if that’s all that’s happened to the logo in 900 years, it’s impressively consistent.
At the same time, any change to a design this old and beloved is noteworthy. Think of all the new stuff you could stamp this on: tee-shirts, hats, spaceships…
I wonder if the U.S. government will take inspiration from this new logo, too:
