Avatar 2 reveals first look at crab-inspired vehicle

We’ve got a while to wait until we can see Avatar 2, but the producers are giving us behind-the-scenes looks at the nifty technology they’ve come up with.

Avatar 2 may not be coming out for another two years, but we’re getting sneak peeks to hold us over. And at the rate keep getting pushed back, they’re going to need to give us a lot more behind-the-scenes stuff between now and then. But hey, at least they were the first big-budget production to get back to work, so there’s that.

Also, Avatar 2 and all the sequels to follow better be the best movies the world has ever seen. At this point if James Cameron hasn’t invented technology that allows viewers to literally visit Pandora, then what have we waited so long for?

Anyway, today’s sneak peek comes courtesy of producer Jon Landau: it’s a new underwater vehicle called the Crabsuit:

At first glance, I’m not that impressed with how it looks. Given how long it’s been since the first movie, I have incredibly high expectations for Avatar 2, and this just isn’t doing it for me. But maybe once it’s in action and doing its thing, my opinion might change.

Side note: For my Sonic the Hedgehog fans, doesn’t it sort of look like Dr. Robotnik’s drill car vehicle? Kind of? Maybe?

What’s cool about the Crabsuit is that will work on land and sea. Avatar 2 will spend a lot of time underwater exploring Pandora’s oceans, so expect a lot of technology themed around that.

Another interesting tidbit about the Crabsuit is that it’s for human use, so we’ll still have human characters in play in addition to Na’vi like Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and Jake Sully (Sam Worthington). Not much has been revealed about the plot, but I’m sure we can rely on the humans to muck up Pandora’s ecosystem somehow.

Stay tuned for more updates: I’m sure we’ll be getting them in for days, months, and years to come.

In other sneak peaks, Marvel is back to work shooting on Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which had already shot some of its footage before the coronavirus intervened. Although it’ll still be a while before we see it, at least it’s back to work in Australia:

These movies are all going to come out…just, like, a year later than they were going to at first.
