Nia DaCosta, who’s directing the upcoming remake of Candyman, will direct Captain Marvel 2.

Captain Marvel 2 may not be releasing for quite some time (not for another two years, on July 8, 2022), but things are moving.. As reported by Deadline, the Captain Marvel sequel will be directed by Candyman’s Nia DaCosta. She will join WandaVision writer Megan McDonnell. Together, they will replace the husband and wife team of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who both wrote and directed the first film.

Given that she directed the upcoming Candyman reboot, I’m wondering what horror elements she could bring to the highly-anticipated sequel. Say “Captain Marvel” three times and aliens attack the Earth…something like that?

DaCosta being named as the director for Captain Marvel 2 has not been officially confirmed by Marvel or Disney, but Deadline is very reliable.

This is a good move for the series. First and foremost, it pays off the studio’s efforts to diversify their cast and crew on all levels. Not many Black women have directed big budget movies like this; the only other one that springs to mind is Ava DuVernay on A Wrinkle in Time. Also, it’s good to bring in a new director to keep things fresh and exciting, with the Marvel Cinematic Universe always in flux.

We last saw Captain Marvel in Avengers: Endgame as she kicked some major ass and helped save the world from Thanos. Coming to the aid of the remaining Avengers after Thanos’ snap, Captain Marvel proved herself as one of the most powerful superheroes in the MCU.

Brie Larson gave one hell of a performance in her solo movie as well as Endgame, so we’re all eager to see her back in action. The original Captain Marvel made over $1 billion at the box office, so Disney is no doubt eager to get moving on this, as well.

Let the countdown begin!
