Artist Sam Hogg brings scenes from A Song of Ice and Fire to life in a new calendar, including some moments from the world’s rich history.

The 2021 A Song of Ice and Fire calendar is now available to buy! Every year Penguin Random House puts out one of these things, and every year it’s exciting to see what scenes the artist has chosen to render, and how.

For 2021, the artist is Sam Hogg, and she’s produced some wonderful work. Better yet, she’s put all of it up on her website! Let’s take a look.

For January, Hogg has illustrated the wedding of Jeyne Poole to Ramsay Bolton, with Theon Greyjoy walking her down the aisle, so to speak:

For February, we have a look inside Chataya’s, a popular King’s Landing brothel:

We’d seen both of those images before; time for the new stuff!

First up is March, which has Maggy the Frog delivering a fateful prophecy to a young Cersei Lannister:

I love this one immediately.

April brings us Tyrion Lannister meeting Oberyn Martell outside King’s Landing:

May brings us a very interesting scene from A Storm of Swords, where Jaime Lannister encounters a ghostly Rhaegar Targaryen in a dream. Also he’s naked and so is Brienne.

For June, Hogg gets creative and shows us what’s happening under the waters of the Gods Eye lake: it’s the corpses of Aemond Targaryen and the dragon Vhagar, killed over a century ago during the Dance of the Dragons:

That’s the Valyrian steel sword Dark Sister plunged through his eye.

For July, we have the Kingsguard knight Arys Oakheart charing Areo Hotah in Dorne, while Arianna Martell watches her plan to crown Myrcella queen falls apart.

In August, we get Daenerys Targaryen torching Astapor:

September brings us the cover image: Quentyn Martell trying to release the dragons from beneath Meereen:

In October, we have Arya Stark whispering a name to Jaqen H’ghar in Harrenhal, from A Clash of Kings:

For November, we have Jaime Lannister watching over his father’s body at Tywin’s funeral.

Note the golden hand.

Finally, for December, we have Ned and Catelyn in the Winterfell godswood:

But there’s more! The calendar comes with an extra, two-page image of Aemond and Vhagar fighting Lucerys Velaryon and the dragon Arrax above the Gods Eye during the Dance of the Dragons:

We never got to see this fight during Game of Thrones, but maybe in House of the Dragon
