Spider-Man vs. Electro — The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 all but ended Sony’s hopes of having its own Spidey-centric movie franchise. The problems in this movie are pretty straightforward: there are pacing issues, there’s too much going on, and there are some bizarre creative decisions.
The final battle itself between Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield) and Electro (Jamie Foxx) uses some spectacular special effects, but it all falls flat. It looks fantastic, especially with all of the web-swinging action, but some strange editing decisions bring it way down. I’m thinking specifically of how Electro fights Spider-Man to the tune of “Itsy Bitsy Spider,” with each new blow another note. It’s a laughable, head-scratching choice for a fight.
Aside from that, we’ve got some awful dialogue throughout the whole new movie, and we can’t forget the divisive decision to kill Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), which pound home the last nail in the coffin of this would-be franchise. It also doesn’t help that we never had a sequel to round off the trilogy; we’ll be forever left on the sour note of losing Gwen.
