The Moon Spirit

The first-season finale of The Last Airbender raises the stakes for our characters, taking the mostly lighthearted series to a much darker place when the Fire Nation attacks the Northern Water Tribe. Watching experienced Waterbenders take on the Fire Nation army makes for a more interesting battle than anything we’d seen up to that point, and that’s before we get to Aang’s part in the fight.

Although Aang goes into the Avatar state prior to the finale, he finally uses it properly — and viciously — in “The Seige of the North Part 2.” This is one of the first times that Aang’s potential truly shines through, and although Netflix might have a hard time replicating this scene, it’ll be powerful if done right.

Zhao’s killing of the Moon Spirit could also be very eerie in a live-action show, as the world goes dark without the moon. (How’s that for “gritty,” Netflix?) Throw in a talented actress playing Princess Yue, and this first-season finale could blow viewers away in the live-action series just like it did in the original. Fingers crossed.
