Today, the Tenth Doctor meets the Fourth for the first time in Doctor Who: Out of Time. But this won’t be the only multi-Doctor story that David Tennant will be involved in…

It’s taken a long time, but the long-awaited meeting between David Tennant’s and Tom Baker’s Doctors is finally here! Make sure to check our full review for new Doctor Who story Out of Time here, but rest assured: it’s exactly as fun as you’re hoping it’d be.

But that’s not the only exciting news that Big Finish has given us today. They’ve also revealed major details on later installments of the Out of Time series. We’ve known that all three releases will be multi-Doctor stories, but Big Finish has kept quiet about which Doctors will be featuring, or even when we can expect them. Until now.

We knew that Ten appeared in the first release. But what we didn’t know until now is that he’s appearing in all three Out of Time stories. This is somewhat surprising, but having listened to the first story of the trilogy, it also makes sense. It appears that the title Out of Time isn’t just referring to different Doctors meeting each other. It also seems to be referencing Ten’s story in a big way, as he knows that his end is coming, ever since hearing the prophecy in Planet of the Dead.

Today, the Tenth Doctor met his Fourth self. But what other Doctors will he be meeting?

Out of Time 2 & 3

Out of Time 2: The Gates of Hell by David Llewellyn will be released in Jun 2021 and will also star Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor. In the catacombs of Paris, they’ll both be facing old enemies the Cybermen.

Out of Time 3 – Wink by Lisa McMullin will feature a New Series monster: specifically, the Weeping Angels. Joining Ten is the Sixth Doctor, as played by Colin Baker. This final story will be released in Jul 2022.

While it’s a shame that other New Series Doctors aren’t involved in the trilogy, it’s not exactly surprising, either. Especially as – up until the announcement of Christopher Eccleston’s return just this month – David Tennant is currently the only Doctor from the New Series working for Big Finish. So it’s not exactly a huge surprise that he’s involved in the whole trilogy.

The idea that they’re all set towards the end of Ten’s life is also an exciting one. Meeting Four in Out of Time acts as a reminder of how much regeneration truly changes him. Meeting his other earlier selves won’t make things any easier.

Different Doctors, different sides

On top of that, both upcoming meetings are exciting in their own way. Five and Ten had previously met in the short Children in Need minisode Time Crash by Steven Moffat, so I’m sure we can expect one or two references to that little adventure.

Ten sharing a full-on adventure with Six is just as exciting, perhaps because, on the surface, they come across as very different Doctors. So it’ll be interesting to explore the differences between those two – and their similarities, too.

You can pre-order Out of Time 2 and 3 right now on CD or download directly from Big Finish’s website, either individually or as part of a bundle. In the meantime, be sure to check out and enjoy the first story of the series, which is a great little multi-Doctor adventure.
