The Subtle Knife is unsheathed in trailer for His Dark Materials season 2

His Dark Materials is coming back! Get a look at HBO’s adaptation of The Subtle Knife. Plus, we finally have a release window!

Last year, HBO gave us its glossy adaptation of Philip Pullman’s classic fantasy trilogy His Dark Materials, and a couple of kids who may have to save not one but many worlds. I thought the first season was alright, but there was room for improvement. Luckily, fans know that the second book in the trilogy, The Subtle Knife, is where things really get going. And if the new trailer is any indication, they’re gonna get going fast and furious:

When last we left Lyra (Dafne Keen) and Will (Amir Wilson), they’d both left their realities for parts unknown. Fans know they’ll meet up in Cittàgazze, where they’ll find a very special weapon. We do get a brief look at the titular subtle knife in the teaser, but don’t see it doing what it’s famous for.

We also get a look at the ghostly Spectres that haunt the dead city, as well as at witches, Andrew Scott as Will’s dad John Parry, Lin-Manuel Miranda back in action as Texan aeronaut Lee Scoresby, and Ruth Wilson as the grimly indomitable Mrs. Coulter, who for my money pretty much stole the show in the first season. And of course, Lyra’s dæmon Pantalaimon is there, too.

I’m looking forward to this season. I thought season 1 from writer Jack Throne trying to expand the scope beyond what was there in the book, dragging down sections that should have passed quickly. But in The Subtle Knife, the world opens up all on its own, so hopefully it’ll feel more natural.

His Dark Materials season 2 debuts sometime in November!

And as long as we’re talking about trailers, we just got a new one for the final episodes of Supernatural, which will find brothers Sam and Dean Winchester on a quest to kill God. No biggee.

The beginning of the end of Supernatural starts on October 8.

dark. Next. James McAvoy and Lin-Manual Miranda were His Dark Materials fanboys before landing the show
