13. Starkiller

Real name Galen Marek, Starkiller was first introduced in the 2008 video game Soulcalibur IV, a fighting game that otherwise had very little to do with Star Wars.

But Starkiller didn’t let that stop him. Most Star Wars fans know Starkiller from Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, which came out just a couple months later. In this game, Starkiller is the protagonist.

A secret apprentice of Darth Vader, Starkiller was trained as the Dark Lord’s personal assassin. As Marek grew stronger, both he and Darth Vader plotted to kill Emperor Palpatine.

However, when Palpatine learned of Vader’s intention, he convinced Vader to kill his secret apprentice instead. The betrayal inspired Starkiller to start a rebellion against the Empire, although the itself was a ruse; he remained loyal to Darth Vader. Key members of the future Rebel Alliance, including Mon Mothma, joined Starkiller, only for them to be arrested by Darth Vader.

Vader eventually betrayed Starkiller once again and left him for dead. This time, Starkiller realized he was not wanted and he decided to undo the wrong he’d done. He boarded the Death Star and freed Mon Mothma and the other rebels, and died in the escape attempt.

His sacrifice was not forgotten. The Rebel Alliance rose out of the ashes of Starkiller’s sacrifice. The symbol of the Rebellion that we have all know is the family symbol of Galen Marek.

So in a way, Starkiller, the secret apprentice of Darth Vader, was responsible for creating the Rebel Alliance. Does that mean that Darth Vader started the Rebellion? Maybe Vader intended for it to happen all along? That’s be a great question to explore in a movie…

By the time of Darth Vader, there weren’t many Siths around. Let’s visit with the man responsible for that:
