Check out the first of three VR events about HBO’s Lovecraft Country!
By Dan Selcke
Lovecraft Country is one of the most fascinating shows to come out of HBO in a while, and fans can now experience it in…virtual reality.
Are you watching Lovecraft Country, HBO’s new show that takes the horror fiction of H.P. Lovecraft, turns it inside out, puts it through a blender and filters it through the Black American experience? If you’re not, you may want to, cause it’s a fascinating show full of energy and big ideas, swinging between scenes of phantasmagoric horror and loving period detail, with a cast that makes it all go down easy.
To promote the show, HBO is mounting a series of Lovecraft Country VR events, which it’s inviting 100 “select influential voices” (read: social media influencers) to experience while the rest of us watch it on YouTube. The name for this endeavor? Sanctum.
The first experience, Garden of Eden, has already happened. This one invited participants to “stroll through a whimsical garden and experience afrofuturist art installations by David Alabo, Devan Shimoyama and Adeyemi Adegbesan, exploring a unique vision of Black beauty, power, and life.” Check it out:
All of the invitees are experiencing these events via Oculus Rift headsets, all from the safety of their own homes, of course, since in the time of corona bringing everyone together is a definite no-no.
The events will include the voices of cast members Jonathan Majors, Courtney B. Vance and Michael Kenneth Williams, while Jurnee Smollett will deliver “a theatrical performance.”
There are two events left: “An American Dream” will take place at 10:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 24, while “Music of the Cosmos” will happen at the same time on Monday, October 19, which just so happens to be the day after the show airs its season finale.
In the meantime, Lovecraft Country airs its fourth episode this Sunday, so now’s a great time to check it out!
