Two new Doctor Who audio stories are released today in one exciting double bill: The Flying Dutchman and Displaced, featuring the Seventh Doctor, Ace, and Hex!

This month’s regular Doctor Who audio from Big Finish once again sees a changeup in the TARDIS team. While we’re waiting to hear the emotional fallout from last month’s Fifth Doctor release Thin Time / Madquake, this month, we get to enjoy not one but two brand new adventures for the Seventh Doctor, Ace, and Hex: The Flying DutchmanDisplaced.

This team is a rather special one, at least for this regular listener. Hex joined the TARDIS in 2004 story The Harvest. Considering how popular the Seventh Doctor and Ace have always been, this could’ve been a risky move for Big Finish, and yet the new companion fitted the group dynamic perfectly.

They also went through a lot. Over the course of a decade, there were several epic arcs told with this particular team, leading to several major revelations and turning points. Stories like Project: DestinyA Death in the Family, and Gods and Monsters were amazing to listen to because of how much buildup had lead to each and every one of them.

The Flying Dutchman

It was a sad moment when Hex left in 2014 story Signs and Wonders. But of course, this is Big Finish, and with their audios, there are always more stories to be told of both Doctors and companions past. So it’s great to revisit this particular era with two new stories.

The first is The Flying Dutchman by Gemma Arrowsmith, which focuses on the legendary ghost ship of the same name. Arrowsmith was particularly excited about writing for Ace with this one.

"Ace was my companion. I remember watching the last few episodes of Doctor Who go out before its cancellation. I have a faint memory of watching Survival while eating spaghetti bolognaise! I’m pretty sure that’s a real memory and not an invented one."

Displaced

Displaced by Katharine Armitage focuses on the trio trapped inside an ordinary house where something strange is going on. Armitage was extremely happy to write for this TARDIS team, specifically.

"These three are so brilliant to write for because they’re all very playful (there’s always time for a decent bit of banter) but then they all have their murky depths and big hearts. Ace gets her ‘detective’ on and the Doctor is as tricksy as ever. Hex is really the one who holds them together in Displaced because it deals with themes he understands far better than the others."

The Flying Dutchman / Displaced is available now on both CD and download directly from Big Finish’s website. You can purchase it as an individual release or as part of a subscription.
