If you can’t wait for season 5 of The Expanse to start on Amazon, this politically charged comic from Boom! Studios will tide you over.
Amazon is currently hard at work on a fifth season of The Expanse, its expansive, imaginative sci-fi show that has sometimes been called “Game of Thrones in space,” on account of how many twisty-turny schemes and plots feature in its narrative. The show gained a passionate following back when it was on SyFy, and when it was cancelled, those fans made their devotion known to the point where Amazon gave it a second lease on life.
With the freedom afforded by Amazon, the show’s fourth season broke new ground, and the fifth promises to be just as interesting. But if fans can’t wait for that, Boom! Studios is releasing a comic that bridges the gap between the season 4 finale and the season 5 premiere, focusing on Chrisjen Avasarala’s battle to hold onto her power in the United Nations.
“The longtime secretary-general of the United Nations Chrisjen Avasarala finds herself dealing with the outcome of the tumultuous elections for her position and far from Earth but not its politics,” reads Boom!’s synopsis. “When Bobbie Draper – a former Martian marine – brings Avasarala intel on an intergalactic black market weapons ring, Avasarala sees a chance to reclaim her political position through a clandestine operation. But as Draper digs deeper into this secret cabal, she soon realizes the threat they pose is far larger – and closer to home – than either of them ever imagined.”
The comic is simply titled The Expanse. It’ll be written by Corinna Bechko, who sounds thrilled to come aboard. “I couldn’t be more excited to add a piece to the universe of The Expanse!” she said. “It’s a show I both adore and admire, so the chance to craft a noir-tinged plot involving two of my absolute favorite characters from the series makes me feel like the luckiest writer around.”
Artist Alejandro Aragon is similarly enthused. “The Expanse is one of the best sci-fi television shows out there right now,” he said. “I am honored to be a part of this journey and very excited to draw this universe and the incredible characters in it.”
The comic is set firmly in the world of the series, so even if we don’t see this stuff when season 5 starts up, we can rest assured that it happened offscreen.
Meanwhile, The Expanse season 5 premieres on Amazon on December 12, 2019.
