A brand new series of animated Dalek episodes has been revealed – one that’s tied to the major Doctor Who event Time Lord Victorious!

Yesterday, a key part of Time Lord Victorious was finally announced. A brand new CGI animated series will be launching on the official Doctor Who YouTube channel later this year, focusing on the Doctor’s greatest enemies: the Daleks!

This exciting new series will consist of five episodes of ten minutes each and will be released on a weekly basis. The series has been written by James Goss, who also acts as the producer of Time Lord Victorious, and created by animators Studio Liddell. Below is the official synopsis for the series, as well as the brand new teaser released yesterday.

"The Dalek Empire comes up against a terrible force. The Daleks’ plundering of the Archive of Islos unearths something ancient and deadly. Soon Skaro is under attack and the Dalek Emperor is on the run! Can the Daleks defeat their adversaries and regain their planet, even with help from an old enemy? Will this be the end of the Daleks?"

The cast

The voiceover cast for the series includes Joe Sugg, Anjli Mohindra (best known to Doctor Who fans as Rani Chandra in The Sarah Jane Adventures, and who recently appeared in Series 12 episode Nikola Tesla’s Night of Terror as Queen Skithra), Ayesha Antoine (who played Dee Dee in Tenth Doctor episode Midnight) and of course, last but not least, Nicholas Briggs.

The last is definitely unsurprising to see. Briggs has been voicing the Daleks both on audio and on television for virtually the whole of the 21st century so far, so it’s natural to see him as a part of this. On top of that, he’s also a big Dalek fan himself, so naturally, he’s rather excited about this animated project, as he revealed to the official Doctor Who website.

"This latest, fantastic, thrill-packed venture into the world of animation, with the Daleks as the stars of the show, is something so many of us have been craving for years. And for me it’s been a marvellous challenge, as usual playing every single Dalek in action, but with the added excitement of portraying some beautifully written, leading Dalek characters. It’s been a blast, and I can’t wait to see the finished production."

Dalek spin-offs

It’s also worth noting that this isn’t the first Dalek spin-off that Briggs has been involved in. In 2001, he created, wrote, and starred in the audio spin-off series Dalek Empire. Fans of the pepper pots should definitely check it out, but be warned: it’s extremely grim, gritty stuff.

I’m expecting that Daleks! will be considerably lighter and more fun to watch. I’m also excited to see how much it ties into Time Lord Victorious, too. Also, it’s nice to see the Dalek Emperor have a major role in this – featuring a similar design to that seen in sixties Dalek comics. The Emperor also has a key role to play in the Time Lord Victorious comic series, so that’s one clear link, at least.

We can’t wait to find out more when the series begins in November. In the meantime, be sure to check out the timeline for the rest of Time Lord Victorious here and see what other stories we can look forward to.
