Doctor Who season 13 (hopefully) still on track to air in 2021

If you’ve heard rumors that we won’t see a new season of Doctor Who until 2022, we’re here to put your mind at ease, at least a little.

It’s no secret that the coronavirus has shut down productions all over the planet. Naturally, that’s worried some Doctor Who fans who think that production on the upcoming thirteenth season of the show could be delayed. And indeed, there are reports out there that fans won’t see season 13 until 2022.

But fear not (or at least, fear less), because inside sources at Digital Spy have it that the production team is still aiming to start shooting new episodes this year like normal, and remain hopeful that the new adventures of the Thirteenth Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) will start airing in 2021.

While it’s true that the coronavirus has made things difficult for content creators, in the last month or two, a handful of films and shows have gotten back to work, including Netflix’s The Witcher and the next Jurassic World movie. So it’s not absurd to think that Doctor Who could get back into it, too.

It also tracks with what showrunner Chris Chibnall’s said in Doctor Who Magazine back in May: he was hopeful that they could get back on set sometime this year, so maybe, just maybe, Whovians, 2021 might be the year things get back to normal (fingers crossed).

But whether or not we get a new season next year, there is one thing Whovians can look forward to in the next few months: the holiday special “Revolution of the Daleks“! Luckily, that was filmed at the same time as season 12, and was not impacted by the production halt.

It’s unclear if we’ll get to see the special on Christmas Day 2020 or if they will wait until New Year’s Day as they did for last year’s holiday special. Whatever happens, we’re getting something at least. And hopefully we’ll be watching season 13 sometime in the new year.
