Good news for DC fans: quirky superhero show Doom Patrol is officially coming back for a third season, but Harley Quinn is still on the bubble.

Good news for fans of quirky superhero dramas: Doom Patrol, which began life on the DC Universe streaming service before hopping over to HBO Max, is coming back for a third season.

That’s good news, not just because the show is delightfully weird, but because the second season ended on a cliffhanger, as our team of dysfunctional superheroes — including Brendan Fraser as Cliff “Robotman” Steele — was fighting against the very creepy Candlemaker. Other cast members include Diane Guerrero, April Bowlby, Timothy Dalton and Matt Bomer.

Ever since HBO Max debuted, there have been questions swirling about what was going to happen to the original shows that debuted on DC Universe. That particular streaming service never seemed long for this world; I mean, even the incredibly popular Marvel movies are just bundled into Disney+. Asking people to to pay an extra subscription fee just to watch DC stuff seemed like a stretch.

That said, DC Universe definitely had some solid shows. Doom Patrol was one. The delightfully irreverent adult cartoon Harley Quinn was another. But while Doom Patrol is officially coming back, Harley Quinn remains on the bubble. During the show’s panel at the recent DC FanDome, a fan asked supervising producer Jennifer Coyle if Harley Quinn would be getting a third season. “The answer is, I hope so,” she said.

The second season ended with Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy running away together, which could serve as a solid ending or lead into a whole new story. If the show does get a third season, executive producer Justin Halpern knows where he wants to take it. “We want to focus on Harley and Ivy’s relationship,” Halpern said. “I’m less interested in if the Joker gets a new girlfriend or not than I am in this relationship that we’ve spent two years building.”

Here’s hoping.
