CBS All Access is bravely following the leads of other streaming services and changing its name to Paramount+. That’ll help it stand out…right?

Not long ago, we heard that CBS All Access — the streaming service best known for having approximately 7 million Star Trek shows — was thinking of changing its name to Paramount+, the better to expand its scope and fight in the streaming wars against the likes of Netflix, HBO Max and the rest. Now, ViacomCBS has made it official.

“The company’s transformed subscription video on-demand and live streaming service, CBS All Access, will be rebranded as Paramount+ in early 2021 as part of the service’s expansion to feature content from ViacomCBS’ leading portfolio of broadcast, news, sports and entertainment brands,” ViacomCBS said in a statement.

They also announced a bunch of new series on the way, including:

  • The Offer, a scripted limited event series about the making of The Godfather.
  • Lioness, a spy drama about a young Marine recruited to befriend the daughter of a terrorist to bring the organization down from within.
  • Revivals of both MTV’s Behind the Music and BET’s The Game.
  • The Real Criminal Minds, a true crime docuseries based on the CBS show.

“Paramount is an iconic and storied brand beloved by consumers all over the world, and it is synonymous with quality, integrity and world-class storytelling,” said VicamoCBS president and CEO Bob Bakish. “With Paramount+, we’re excited to establish one global streaming brand in the broad-pay segment that will draw on the sheer breadth and depth of the ViacomCBS portfolio to offer an extraordinary collection of content for everyone to enjoy.”

With a base price of $5.99, CBS All Access/Paramount+ is one of the cheaper streaming services out there, but it’s still gonna be hard to stand out in such a crowded field. Also, is anyone else a little disappointed that they went with a “plus” name? Disney+, Apple TV+, now Paramount+…there are other naming options out there.

Anyway, there’s no word on exactly when the change will happen, but it’s coming in “early 2021.”
