David Tennant returns in the first trailer for Doctor Who: Dalek Universe

David Tennant returns to the role of the Tenth Doctor in a new Doctor Who audio adventure from Big Finish. Check out what’s in store!

Big Finish just dropped a trailer for Doctor Who: Dalek Universe, a new audio drama featuring David Tennant back in the role of the Tenth Doctor, and I’ll be the first to say: WOWZA! Big Finish has been giving us a lot of Doctor Who adventures, including as part of the ambitious Time Lord Victorious project, but given that Tennant’s Tenth Doctor is my favorite, this is one I’m the most hyped for.

Dalek Universe will see the Tenth Doctor pulled out of time and fending for himself before the Last Great Time War. It’s a prologue to The Dalek Protocol, starring Tom Baker’s Fourth Doctor.

As most Whovians know, the Last Great Time War resulted in the destruction of Gallifrey. In the end, just three Time Lords survived, plus a handful of Daleks.

The trailer starts with a close-up of the TARDIS as the Tenth Doctor’s voice reminds us that “everything ends…eventually.” He reflects back on all he’s lost — Donna, Rose, his people…but as the Doctor, he’s always survived, always endured. He’s had to bear that burden, and remember those who are now gone.

So, yes, everything ends..eventually. “But sometimes, it comes back.”

Cue an image of Daleks exploding while a foreboding score plays in the background. Anyone else have goosebumps?

As it ends up, Tennant is just as excited to return to the role of the Tenth Doctor as Whovians are to hear him:

"It’s a big old epic sweep. It reminds me a little bit of those Flash Gordon serials that used to be on the TV during the school holidays when I was a kid. Each story has its own self-contained world, but the whole thing has an over-arching momentum. I’ve really enjoyed how varied it is, all within this one story, and the variety of worlds that we go to and environments that we’re in. And, as we go through this space opera, to have all these characters brought so clearly to life by a whole range of wonderful actors, it’s been a treat."

And it’ll be a treat to have you back, David Tennant.

Doctor Who: Dalek Universe will release in April 2021 in three volumes. You can pre-order it now through the Big Finish website. And if that isn’t exciting enough, each of the volumes will be available as a four-disc collector’s edition box set or as a download with some other extras tossed in.
