Mark Ruffalo is on board with Tatiana Maslany playing She-Hulk, and hints that he may even appear in the upcoming Disney+ series.

After plentiful rumors, yesterday we learned that Orphan Black star Tatiana Maslany had been cast in the title role of Marvel’s upcoming She-Hulk series on Disney+.  One of the first to respond to the news was Mark Ruffalo, aka He-Hulk, who tweeted his excitement and welcomed Maslany to “the family.”

That’s definitely friendly of him, but will Ruffalo appear in the show? Let’s examine the evidence.

First of all, the “cuz” comment is a reference to the fact that She-Hulk, aka Jennifer Walters, is a cousin of Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner. Walters finds herself in need of a blood transfusion and Banner steps in, leading to Walters ability to transform into a Gamma Ray-powered behemoth just like her cousin.

However, whereas Hulk usually becomes a mindless brute when he transforms (at least until later parts of his story), Walters retains her intelligence and personality as She-Hulk right from the beginning. When not smashing things and fighting crime, Walters is a practicing lawyer, which should give the show the dramatic backbone it needs to sustain itself. Plus, it’ll be fun if Walters argues in court in full superhero gear, as sometimes happens in the comics.

As for the Ruffalo’s appearance on the show, it seems like it pretty much has to happen, since the Hulk is tied so closely to She-Hulk’s origin. Sure, maybe someone could show up with a handy vial of Bruce Banner’s blood, but it’d be a lot more interesting and satisfying to involve the man himself.

Speaking at this year’s C2E2, Ruffalo hinted that a cameo, at least, may be in the cards. “There’s some talk about it, but it’s all kind of preliminary, he said. It would be nice to see Banner, Hulk, Professor [or] somebody show up to help and to guide or a be a gentle guiding presence of She-Hulk as a friend.”

Hopefully things are further along now. We don’t have a release date for She-Hulk yet, but hopefully we’re looking at sometime in 2021.
