10. Finding Out What Comes Next

At Emerald City Comic-Con in 2018, Rothfuss was asked whether The Kingkiller Chronicle was “a DM [Dungeon Master] taking us on a journey where the bard is the hero of the story.” The author responded with an info drop that raised more than a few eyebrows. “It’s way worse than that,” he said. “I am an author who has tricked you into reading a trilogy that is a million-word prologue.”

On the surface, this really shouldn’t be all that surprising. Each novel of The Kingkiller Chronicle trilogy is supposed to represent one day where Kvothe is relaying his story to Chronicler. If the third book brings readers to the point where Kvothe finishes his story and potentially reclaims his identity, it would still leave the question hanging of what he actually has to go do to fix a world that’s fallen into shambles, something he fervently blames himself for.

Setting aside any uneasiness about the release time between Rothfuss’ books, and how likely we are to actually get to read a sequel series to The Kingkiller Chronicle, it’s still fun to hope that with the release of The Doors of Stone, we might actually get confirmation of what that next batch of Temerant novels could look like. Heck, even a clue would be great! Will Kvothe go to war? Will he go around battling daemons and restoring the balance?

Really, it will all depend on what happens in The Doors of Stone. And one day, we’ll be able to read it and find out.
