8. “A Nightmare on State Street,” S08E09

As Psych began to wind down, they began to deal with some heavier themes, since it seemed like Shawn and Gus might be going their separate ways and moving on with their lives. “A Nightmare on State Street” has Gus dealing with his dependence on Shawn and him feeling abandoned as Shawn begins to move forward in his relationship and Gus feels left behind. There’s also a murder!

This episode features Mira Sorvino, William Zabka, Curt Smith (again!), Kurt Fuller, Phylicia Rashad and horror icon Bruce Campbell as Dr. Ashford N. Simpson, Gus’s sleep therapist.

Gus can’t sleep and is having some pretty intense dreams that center around Shawn and several famous horror movie scenes and tropes. Dr. Simpson is there to analyze his nightmares and find the root of the problem. He also hits Gus with this spatula/rake thing and it is delightful. This is a great Gus episode as we see him really take the comedy reins and let his high-pitched screams guide him.

A man is convinced that his wife is cheating on him, but when someone ends up dead, infidelity may be the least of his concerns. While this episode was as silly as ever by Psych standards, it really did deal with more emotional subjects. Watching it, you feel like the show really is ending, which it was. Because of that, I couldn’t put it higher on the list. While I love all of the horror movie nods, it feels too heavy.
