4. “The Devil is in the Details…and the Upstairs Bedroom,” S04E04

Finally, we have a possession episode! While “A Touch of Sweevil” is about a psychic convention, this episode is about….THE DEVIL. The whole thing is an homage to The Exorcist, and introduces the recurring character of Father Peter Westley (Ray Wise), our duo’s childhood priest who isn’t a big fan of Shawn asking too many questions about the contradictions in The Bible.

When a young woman at the local Catholic university jumps off the roof, it looks like an obvious suicide, but not long before her character changed drastically and Father Westley suspects something more sinister. He believes she was possessed, as he used to be a famous exorcist and knows the signs. Shawn calls BS but Gus is a believer and takes the case. When the young woman’s best friend starts exhibiting the same symptoms, the Psych team is there to figure out if the Devil truly is in the details.

This is such a fun episode, and one made for horror lovers. It takes all of the possession movie tropes and turns them on their head to make something truly hilarious. Plus, I am a big fan of Ray Wise, and the funniest part is that he himself used to play the Devil on a show called Reaper. The irony.
