Norman Reedus teases the “completely different” Carol/Daryl spinoff

The Walking Dead has approximately one million spinoffs in the works, and the guy in charge “think[s] there’ll be others.” Good thing or bad thing?

We seem to be learning about new Walking Dead spinoffs every day, and one of the most exciting is an upcoming show centered around Carol (Melissa McBride) and Daryl (Norman Reedus). These are two of the most popular characters on the show, and perhaps getting their own series will put an end to the constant “will-they, won’t-they” dance that’s been playing out on the mothership show for seasons.

Perhaps Reedus can shed some light on it. The actor went on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and talks a little about the upcoming spinoff. “It’s a different type of show,” he said. “It’ll be completely different.”

Kimmel’s suggestion? A Carol/Daryl sitcom named Hangin’ with Daryl. I think we’d all be on board for that!

One thing does seem certain: if Carol and Daryl are getting their own show, it means they both must survive the whole series…right? You’d think so, but sometimes the producers can throw fans a curveball. Maybe they’ll come up with some zany idea about an alternate universe where Carol and Daryl met in a different way. It’s tough to say, but when it comes to The Walking Dead I expect the unexpected.

We’ll have to hang tight and see how that plays out. First, The Walking Dead will air its season 10 finale on Sunday, October 4. Then we’ll have six extra episodes in 2021, and then an 11th and final season. According to Reedus, the plan is to film all of those episodes in one stretch before officially wrapping up, so he’s got quite the long haul in front of him.

Reedus isn’t the only one talking about The Carol and Daryl Show. The Walking Dead chief content officer Scott M. Gimple spoke to Insider about what to expect, saying some of the things that happen may be drawn from what he and Walking Dead showrunner Angela Kang were planning to do had AMC not cancelled the main show. “Angela and I have been working on a story for awhile and there’s just a very super interesting story there,” he said.

"There are ways the story, of course, was going to continue to keep going. But it is going to continue to keep going with Daryl and Carol. It’s going to be a different show with a different tone, but the story of that corner of ‘The Walking Dead,’ in some ways, it continues to go through them."

Other corners are growing as well. We’ve got a bunch of Rick Grimes movies to look forward to, plus The Walking Dead: World Beyond and another new show called Tales of the Walking Dead, which will be more episodic. “For ‘Tales of the Walking Dead,’ we very much might continue on with characters from the show, the mothership show, intermittently,” Gimple said. “We’re going to fulfill that big board of stories that we want to tackle. In some ways, it’ll be a little differently than perhaps initially planned, but potentially much richer.”

And believe it or not, Gimple is hoping for even more series. “I think there’ll be others. I hope there’ll be others,” he said. “There’s ideas that we are working on right now.”

Here’s hoping the franchise doesn’t burn itself out with all these projects.
