The Walking Dead boss explains the six “extra” episodes of season 10

The Walking Dead season 10 ends this weekend…kind of. There are six “extra” episodes on the way, but they’re gonna be a little different:

The season 10 finale of The Walking Dead airs in just a few days, but it won’t actually be the end of the season. During the show’s Comic-Con@Home panel, it was confirmed that season 10 will return in early 2021 for an additional six episodes.

But what will those episodes involve? AMC has described them as an “extension of episodes beyond the finale,” and now, we’re starting to get some more details.

The six new episodes are currently shooting down in Georgia, where there are strict measures in place to prevent exposure to COVID-19. “The episodes are all designed to be filmed safely during this pandemic that we’re in,” showrunner Angela Kang explained on AMC’s The Walking Dead Universe Preview Special.

According to Kang, the episodes will be different than the usual episodes of the show, and less heavy on plot. “There’s sort of an anthological feel to some of them,” she said. “They’re really deep dives into our characters, which I hope people enjoy.”

Incidentally, AMC is already planning a Walking Dead  anthology series called Tales of The Walking Dead, to after the show ends with season 11. Maybe these six episodes will give us an idea of how that show will play out?

In any case, we can expect a change of pace and a break from the intensity of the Whisperer War. “We’ve been enjoying working on something that’s a little bit different from what we were doing in the main part of season 10,” Kang said. “We just get to feature different people and tell these little stories that all kind of add up to a picture of what our survivors are going through, and that will lead us into season 11 eventually.”

One actor we already know is involved is Lauren Cohan (Maggie). In fact, she’s in Georgia right now, filming away. This likely means we’ll have at least a few episodes focused on her, which makes sense, because she’s hasn’t been on the show since season 9. It’ll be nice to see how they use the extra time to bring Maggie up to speed. A lot of important stuff has gone down since she was last around, including the Whisperers, Negan getting out of prison, Michonne leaving, and multiple characters dying.

Whatever happens in these episodes, we should savor all of it, because we now know we just have 31 more before it’s all over. The countdown is officially underway!

You can catch the season 10 finale of The Walking Dead this Sunday, October 4. Right after that, we’ve got even more zombie action with the premiere of The Walking Dead: World Beyond. A premiere date for the additional episodes is yet to be announced.
