The Witcher (basically) confirmed for season 3
By Dan Selcke
Netflix is already making two spinoffs based on The Witcher, so it’s no surprise to hear that they’ve already okayed a third season.
The Witcher was an instant hit for Netflix when it hit the streaming service late last year. An adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski’s book series (with some cues taken from the hugely successful video games from CD Projekt Red), the show tells the story of Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill), a professional monster hunter making his way in a fantasy country on the brink of war.
Given the show’s success, it was inevitable that it would get a second season. That’s filming right now, although the coronavirus is causing some issues. And we’ve been hearing for a while that Netflix went ahead and greenlit a third season. Insider KC Walsh was saying that as early as July of 2019, before the first season even dropped:
Now, Redanian Intelligence has dug up further proof of the continuing adventures of Geralt, Yennefer, Ciri and Jaskier. They’ve noted that a third season of the show has shown up in the database for the Writers Guild of America:
The way filming is going, I doubt The Witcher season 3 will come out in that 2020-2021 timeframe — we’ll be lucky if season 2 releases before the second half of 2021 — but it’s good to see the team laying groundwork.
Netflix is clearly very happy with The Witcher, so it’s no surprise to see that it’s making long-term plans. The show already has two spinoffs in the works: an animated movie called Nightmare of the Wolf, and a prequel series called Blood Origin. They are all in, so we might as well get on board.
