X-Men star Tye Sheridan talks getting replaced as Cyclops for the MCU
By Dan Selcke
It’s only a matter of time before Disney recasts the X-Men for another round of movies. Tye Sheridan (Cyclops) looks forward to his replacement.
Disney is bringing back the X-Men at some point. There’s no doubt about it. The superhero team has had a lot of ups (2017’s Logan) and downs (2019’s Dark Phoenix) on the big screen over the past 20 years, but the characters are too recognizable not to revive. And now that Disney has purchased 20th Century Fox, it’s only a matter of time before they get new actors to play these mutants as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
And the characters have already gone through one round of recasting. Tye Sheridan made his debut as Scott Summers/Cyclops in 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse, and played him a couple more times before the Disney buyout. He was replacing James Marsden, who had played the character for several films before that. “I was excited and honored to play Scott Summers after James Marsden,” Sheridan told ComicBook.com. “I always looked up to that guy and I always thought he was super cool in those movies, and a good guy and a great actor.
So clearly he has respect for the guy who played the role before him. But what about the person who will play the role of the laser-eyed mutant after him? Sheridan doesn’t sound put out by the possibility of being replaced, so long as his successor is doing a good job:
"I think it’s an honor to kind of fill the shoes of something that’s great or someone that’s great. I don’t think I would feel weird, you know, as long as… think they’re doing, the cast is doing, the story justice and they’re doing the X-Men world justice."
Fair enough.
As for who will eventually replace Sheridan — not to mention who will play Wolverine and Storm and Jean Grey and all the rest — we have no idea. They already gave us a fully adult Cyclops with James Marsters and showed us what he was like as a teenager with Sheridan. Maybe they could give us an older, more grizzled Cyclops next?
