The Walking Dead’s Lauren Cohan would love to see Rick come back
By Ariba Bhuvad
The Walking Dead’s Lauren Cohan knows exactly how she’d like to see the series wrap up.
The Walking Dead is officially ending, and while it seems like the final season is still a bit off from premiering, it will be here before we know it. I think we all have a lot of thoughts on how we would like to see the series to end, and most of those begin and end with one name–Rick Grimes.
Side note: The decision to end the series came from AMC rather than the creative team, according to an interview Scott M. Gimple did with Decider. It makes sense from the perspective of the growing universe, you don’t want it to get oversaturated with the same stories, more or less.
"“You know, that was really more on AMC’s side of the equation,” Gimple revealed. “We have a ton of story to get through. And then story beyond that. AMC had a good idea of the space we were working in creatively, and they made a call on it. But to tell you the truth, there’s so much planned.”"
In any case, I think more than anything many of us desire to see how the series will connect to the future Rick Grimes movies, and while The Walking Dead: World Beyond is meant to shed some light on that, I think the show that started it all should get the final word on it.
Best case scenario, Andrew Lincoln reprises his role for one last hurrah on the series finale. Worst-case scenario? Well, I don’t want to think about that just yet, so let’s just hope and pray for Rick’s return, shall we?
It looks like Lauren Cohan (Maggie) is in agreement as she too wishes to see Rick return before The Walking Dead closes the curtain once and for all. In conversation with GamesRadar+, Cohan shared her vision for the end–and it’s glorious.
"“There’s so many ways it could go and maybe I just don’t really think it’s over. I can’t foresee the end!” Cohan revealed. “If we’re just dreaming, I would love to see Rick come back. That’s how I’d love it to end, I’d love to see him land in a helicopter and Michonne to be with him.”"
She literally took the words right out of my mouth. A Rick and Michonne return is what we are all hoping for. I truly can’t imagine anything better than that! Well, apart from Cohan’s other hope for the end–a massive time jump, 40 years to be exact.
"“It would be really, really fun if we got to do a 40-year time jump,” Cohan elaborated. “You sort of peel back and start on a close-up of some very elderly hands and it takes a minute to figure out whose they are. Once you realize whose they are, where they are and where the world is now and what that means and who’s with her… maybe it’s her final days. Maybe she doesn’t die by a zombie? That’s an idea.”"
I imagine something like the final scene of the seventh Harry Potter movie, where all the characters have grown up and are sending their kids off to Hogwarts. With better makeup effects, of course (please).
We must admit that seeing Cohan doing so many interviews and talking about The Walking Dead has been such a pleasant change. It was tough to see her leave the show at the same as Andrew Lincoln but knowing her character is back in the mix is a huge sense of comfort. Maggie has always been one of my favorite characters, and I know that her return will surely pave the way for some epic episodes and storylines as we near the end.
