Movie after movie is getting delayed, but at least one big one is coming out…earlier than expected? All right, I’ll take it.
2020 is officially the year without movies. Just yesterday, Denis Villeneuve’s new Dune movie was booted from its December date to October 1 of 2021, delayed by almost a full year. And October 1, 2021 also happened to be the day that Warner Bros. was set to release The Batman, so you knew that was gonna get delayed, too.
And so it came to pass. Variety reports that The Batman will now come out on March 4, 2022. And that’s not all. The Flash movie, originally slated for June 3, 2022, is now on the docket for November 4, 2022. Shazam 2, which was gonna come out on November 4, 2022, has been pushed back to June 2, 2023. And Black Adam and the Minecraft movie have been taken off the schedule entirely.
So things are bleak. However, one quirk is that The Matrix 4 — which will feature the return of Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, as well as a host of newcomers — is actually coming out sooner than anticipated, on December 22, 2021 rather than April 1, 2022 as originally planned. The sooner we see Neo and Trinity back in action battling genocidal computer programs, the better, I guess.
Still, the decision is a little strange given how the coronavirus is causing everything to get delayed, but perhaps The Matrix 4 is further along in development than some of the other big tentpole movies getting made at Warner Bros. Surely by December of next year, we’ll have the coronavirus more under control, right?
…right?
Meanwhile, Warner Bros. still has Wonder Woman 1984 on the schedule for December 25 of this year, Christmas day. At this point, it’s the last movie still standing. Let’s see if it holds firm.
Outside of Warner Bros., the new Ryan Reynolds video game parody Free Guy is set for December 11. There’s also a new trailer:
But again, will that date hold? Edge of my seat here.
