Get your first glimpse at the new Doctor Who’s holiday special
By Ariba Bhuvad
After months of waiting and speculating, we finally have our first look at the upcoming Doctor Who holiday special, “Revolutions of the Daleks.”
We’re still a ways off from a new season of Doctor Who, but worry, not fellow Whovians, because the holiday special, “Revolution of the Daleks,” is just around the corner!
Luckily for us, the special was filmed before the lockdown occurred and productions everywhere came to a screeching halt. We still don’t have an exact premiere date, but BBC America has released a synopsis for this much-needed episode:
"The Doctor is locked away in a high-security alien prison. Isolated, alone, with no hope of escape. Far away, on Earth, her best friends, Yaz, Ryan and Graham have to pick up their lives without her. But it’s not easy. Old habits die hard. Especially when they discover a disturbing plan forming. A plan which involves a Dalek. How can you fight a Dalek, without the Doctor? “Revolution of the Daleks” premieres this holiday season on BBC AMERICA."
Doctor Who stars Jodie Whittaker (the Doctor), Mandip Gill (Yaz) and Bradley Walsh (Graham) all joined the BBC America virtual New York Comic-Con panel earlier this week to share the first look with fans around the world. It’s not a trailer (sadly), but instead, two pictures. They don’t reveal a whole lot and don’t show us any Daleks, but perhaps that’s a blessing in disguise because it keeps the mystery alive. If Whovians love anything, it’s the thrill of the unknown.

Last we saw the Doctor, she was being imprisoned by the Judoon while her companions returned to planet Earth. The first image shows her in prison while she tallies the number of days (or months, or even years) that she’s been incarcerated.

The second photo shows Yaz, Graham and Ryan likely back in Sheffield trying to figure out what became of the Doctor. The notes laid out around the dinner table hint at possible solutions or plans on how they can save her. The fact that she’s imprisoned on an asteroid could make things difficult, but hey, that’s what all those Post-Its are probably for, right?
In any case, we’ll know soon enough what is going on and how the Daleks will be involved. If I’m excited about anything, it’s them. No matter how many times they come back, it’s never enough.
During the panel, we also learned that BBC America will continue the tradition of a Doctor Who marathon that runs from Christmas Day to New Year’s Day. Looks like we Whovians have our holiday schedule all planned out for us!
