1. Episode 209, “743”: Five faces off with Five

Aidan Gallagher takes on Five’s Paradox Psychosis in the most epic moment of season 2: Five vs. Five.

Well, technically it’s Young Five vs Old Five, even though Young Five is actually younger than Old Five, even though he looks like a tweenager. Time-travel is tricky like that.

Anyway, Five is fighting Five to A) stop his older self from killing him, and; B) to get hold of a briefcase that can get his family back to their own time, which is a goal of his throughout the second season. All of it happens with Billy Idol’s “Dancing with Myself” playing in the background. It’s all very confusing and wild, but Gallagher — along with Tom Hopper’s Luther — sells every moment, turning what could be a head-scratchingly puzzling scene into a ridiculously entertaining one.

In the end, the portal is opened and Five’s older self is forced through it, but it comes at the cost of the briefcase getting utterly and completely destroyed. This has serious repercussions for the overall story, but I didn’t think much about it because I was enjoying Gallagher’s performance too much.

The whole scene is just so much fun. Once again Gallagher takes this absurd material he’s given and makes it sing, knowing how to go just far enough to delight us with the weirdness of it all but not going so far that we start rolling our eyes and lose interest. He packs a punch, gives us drama, makes us laugh, and leaves us wanting more by season’s end.

Of course, there are more than five Five moments to celebrate, so be sure to share your favorites in the comments below!
