His Dark Materials season 2 will be “a lot darker”

Amir Wilson (Will Parry) teases what’s to come in the second season of HBO’s His Dark Materials, which will adapt the excellent book The Subtle Knife.
The second season of HBO’s His Dark Materials is right around the corner, and the cast is out there getting people on board the hype train. The first season of the show was solid, but with season 2 set to adapt arguably the best book in Philip Pullman’s beloved fantasy trilogy — The Subtle Knife — it could take things to a new level.
At the end of season 1, both Will Parry (Amir Wilson) and Lyra Belacqua (Dafne Keen) had stepped through tears in reality, off on a journey that will change them both and maybe the universe…or all universes. From the trailer, we know that they meet up in the mysteriously empty city of Cittàgazze.
Things just get more wild from there, and once the titular subtle knife comes into the picture…
Speaking to Yahoo Movies UK, Wilson teased intense times ahead. “There’s a lot to look forward to,” he said. “You can expect that season two will be a lot darker than season one. We get to see Will and Lyra meet for the first time and how their relationship progresses.”
If you’ve read Pullman’s book, you know that this stretch of the story does indeed crank things up, with the introduction of the mysterious Spectres, more villainy from Lord Boreal (Ariyon Bakare) and Mrs. Coulter (Ruth Wilson), and in general an opening of the story. Will and Lyra were fumbling in the dark for the lot of the first season, focused on their individual goals, but the big picture of what’s really going will soon start to coalesce.
And there’s one more book to come after that, but let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves. “I auditioned without having read the books, and in the end I was reading the book and the script at the same time,” Wilson told The Guardian. “It was amazing, it allowed me to get in touch with the world more quickly because I’m actually there, inside it.”
His Dark Materials season 2 premieres on HBO on November 16.
