The First Doctor and his friends will encounter Queen Elizabeth I in next year’s volume of Doctor Who audio series The First Doctor Adventures.

In recent Big Finish news, details have been revealed about next year’s volume of Doctor Who: The First Doctor Adventures. Starring David Bradley as the First Doctor, Jamie Glover as Ian, Jemma Powell as Barbara and Claudia Grant as Susan, the series has so far been a faithful recreation of the show’s earliest era while still telling completely brand new adventures.

Along the way, the TARDIS crew have traveled to various historical periods and landed on several alien worlds. So far, the First Doctor and his friends have been reunited with the Daleks, encountered Samurai, discovered a world without death, and have even faced the Master!

Next year, they’ll be meeting other familiar faces. Not old enemies this time, or even old friends. Instead, they’ll be meeting legends of English history, including Queen Elizabeth I, as played by Wendy Craig, in The Hollow Crown by Sarah Grochala. Set in the time of Shakespeare, the First Doctor and his friends find themselves getting involved in the politics of the royal court.

More from Winter is Coming

Early/latter days

Upon playing such a legendary figure of British history, Wendy Craig had this to say.

"This is really going back into ancient history. I’ve always wanted to play Queen Elizabeth I. I think she’s the most wonderful woman – the most wonderful character. I’ve not played royalty before, as I was always rather more ‘below stairs’ really."

Of course, this raises some interesting questions. After all, technically, this won’t be the first time that Elizabeth has met the Doctor. In fact, from her perspective, she already married him in The Day of the Doctor. Not that the Doctor himself would know any of this, of course. So will there be any hints to this? I’d be very surprised if there weren’t. Even if the Queen never finds out who the Doctor is, I’m sure we’ll get some nods to the Doctor’s future.

Doctor Who: The First Doctor Adventures Volume 5 will be released on CD and download in Apr 2021. You can pre-order it now from Big Finish’s website.
