Outlander isn’t “COVID friendly” enough to get back to work just yet

Outlander executive producer Maril Davis explains why the series has not begun filming season 6, mainly due to it not being “COVID friendly” enough.
Outlander fans are now in the middle of what’s likely going to give us the longest Droughtlander in the show’s history. We still don’t have any solid updates on when the show will begin filming its sixth season, and a lot of us are getting antsy.
Appearing on David Berry (Lord John Grey) and Tim Downie’s (Governor Tryon) Outlander podcast Outcasts, executive producer Maril Davis explained the hold-up:
"We are going to be shooting Season 6. That has been slowed down as well. We will come back once we feel like it’s safe to do so with our crew and our cast. We don’t have the kind of show, unfortunately, that can be COVID friendly. That’s something that a lot of studios are talking about, and some shows have the luxury to do that, we do not. It’s the least COVID-friendly show ever. It means that maybe there’s no kissing, there’s no interaction; there’s not a lot of actors and extras."
Yeah, probably best to wait until they can make the show we know. I know enduring the Droughtlander isn’t ideal, but Outlander wouldn’t the same without the steamy love scenes between Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe). I don’t even want to think about it!
The extras are a big issue, too. As fans know, season 6 is going to explore the Revolutionary War, which means big battle scenes with lots of people. That’s very difficult to control for in the age of COVID, so the production should take as long as it needs to find a way to do it safely.
“Honestly, it’s been conversations that’s been happening since everyone shut down, but we’re still here and I think we’ll still be here,” Davis continued. “So, hopefully, we’ll get a couple more seasons going and we’ll be making this for a long time.”
So strap in, folks: this Droughtlander is going to be a long one, but rest assured, the show will return, and when it does, it will be well worth the wait.
