The Krykna

The giant ice spiders Mando encounters in this episode are sure to make some viewers’ skin crawl. While looking for the Frog Lady in an ice cave, the group comes across a spider’s nest, which leads to a high-tension escape scene. These spine-chilling arachnids are called Krykna, and this isn’t their first appearance.

They were introduced on the Disney XD animated show Star Wars Rebels. In season 2, Sabine Wren and Rex fight off and flee the Krykna on a desert planet. While they are pretty deadly on Rebels, they are a lot more terrifying here.

The concept for the petrifying arachnids dates back to the 1980s, as art from legendary Star Wars artist Ralph McQuarrie had similar-looking “knobby white spiders.” They were likely meant to appear on Dagobah while Luke was training with Yoda during The Empire Strikes Back, but they never did.

And now, The Mandalorian brought McQuarrie’s original concept to life! Keep it coming.
