Dark Matter vs. Dust

Lyra grew up in a university in her world. She also visits one in Will’s world: Oxford, which is a far cry from the home she grew up in. Still, she does discover a new ally, one that may be able to help her find answers about Dust.

Dr. Mary Malone (Simone Kirby) is a physicist at the institution, one who’s trying to crack the mysteries surrounding dark matter. It soon becomes clear that what scientists in Will’s world believe to be dark matter is the same substance the Magisterium refers to as Dust.

In truth, this storyline doesn’t clear up as much about Dust during The Subtle Knife as fans might like. Still, the addition of this character and the developments she brings about are important to the story overall, so hopefully the show will take the appropriate amount of time to focus on both.

If portrayed properly, Mary’s character will give yet another perspective on the themes of religion and science the show is fond of exploring. She’s a nun who left her calling for a career in academic, and has a lot to add to the conversation. Plus, she’s just an awesome character and a real ally to Lyra, who doesn’t always have great luck when it comes to the adults in her life. Her actual parents may be awful, but Lee and Mary are there for her.
