Lee’s Journey
Lee Scoresby is a fan-favorite character in Pullman’s books, and he’s only become more popular since Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda took on the role in the show. The last time we saw the Texan aeronaut, he’d lost track of Lyra and Pan but vowed to help the girl in whatever way he could. And he makes good on that promise in The Subtle Knife, going on his own journey to the ends of the Earth to do what he believes is right.
Season 2 will have to capture Lee’s determination and love for Lyra; the two of them eventually develop a kind of father-daughter surrogate dynamic, even though they don’t interact in the second book. Still, everything Lee does throughout the second book is for Lyra’s sake, and Miranda will need to up his game to convey those emotional stakes.
There’s also the matter of Lee’s ending in The Subtle Knife. Without spoiling anything, Lee’s final moments in the book are epic and need to be treated as such. If the show doesn’t do them justice, the sophomore season will no doubt be received negatively as an adaptation. Fingers crossed they get it right.
