Doctor Who news: Dalek Empire’s first episode is free to download right now!

The first episode of Doctor Who audio spin-off series Dalek Empire is free to download this week. Here’s why you should check it out right now.
This week, Big Finish has re-released the whole of their Doctor Who spin-off series Dalek Empire in two complete box sets. The dark and gritty series is a fantastic take on the Doctor’s oldest enemies, and features a vast cast of flawed characters with a lot of depth. (One of which is played by the Tenth Doctor himself, David Tennant!)
Re-releasing the entire series in two affordable volumes is a great way for the spin-off to reach a new audience. Still, you might want to see if you’ll actually like the series before purchasing it. Fortunately, that’s where Big Finish’s latest free weekly download comes in.
The first episode of Dalek Empire, Invasion of the Daleks, is free to download right now, directly from Big Finish’s website. Here’s the official description for it:
"The Milky Way is at peace. After centuries of struggle, the Earth Alliance has been created and all is well. Then, without warning, the Daleks launch their invasion. An invasion which threatens to tear apart the fabric of our entire galaxy…"

Establishing the series
Invasion of the Daleks is an episode that works extremely well at kicking off this unique spin-off. Nicholas Briggs’s script makes sure to establish the dark, gritty tone and the characters right from the very beginning. We’re introduced to Susan Mendes (Sarah Mowat), Alby Brook (Mark McDonnell), and Kalendorf (Gareth Thomas) – three characters that would become central to Dalek Empire. (Well, for the first two series, at least. Without giving too much away, the series takes on a much bigger scope over time.)
The opening episode also makes sure to explore each of these characters a great deal, while also raising difficult questions about humanity, morality, and survival. If you were trapped in a desperate situation – one where there was no hope of a future – what would you do? Would you give up? Fight back? More importantly, what would happen if hope was suddenly given back to you? Even if it was the smallest of hopes?
All of these questions are explored in an incredibly strong opening episode that kicks off one of Doctor Who‘s greatest audio spin-offs to a strong start.
