The writer and producer of the 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie is eager to bring the live-action versions of the turtles back for a reboot!

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! Heroes in the half shell,
Turtle Power!”

Ahh, the theme song from my childhood that will forever be stuck in my head. Anyone that grew up with the world’s most famous superhero turtles will know exactly what I’m talking about.

But in the off chance you don’t…

You’re welcome for changing your life.

In the 90s, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were a Saturday morning cartoon staple. Despite the various attempts over the years to recreate the magic, no one has ever been able to achieve that classic 1990s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles vibe.

The thing that came the closest was probably the live-action TMNT movies released in the early ’90s, which had assistance from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. The turtle suits look a little odd, sure, but these movies had a charm all their own:

And there’s more Turtle Power on the way. Seth Rogen is set to produce his own TMNT movie. Then there’s Nickelodeon, which is creating a 2D animated TMNT movie with Netflix. That’s a lot of Raphael, Michelangelo, Donatello and Leonardo.

Now, the writer behind the first 1990 movie, Bobby Herbeck, wants back in. Speaking with Comicbook.com, Herbeck even revealed that he’s even spoken to original director Steve Barron and Jim Henson’s son Brian Henson about a comeback…and that they’d consider it.

“We’re trying to make that happen,” Herbeck said. “We want to do a reboot. We got our fans come to us on Instagram, they’re, ‘Why don’t you guys do a reboot of the first movie?’ We’d love to do it.”

Original producer Kim Dawson is also interested, and points out how advancements in technology since the ’90s could help:

"The truth is, this property, it’s established now after 30 years as a part of our modern pop culture, it’s not going away. It’s only going to continue to grow. I do wish that we could go back. I mean, we’ve talked to Steve Barron about this, and Brian Henson, and if there were an opportunity, if one of the studios saw fit, I think we could go back and reboot it like it was…Imagine if Brian Henson had access to the technology he does today to make these costumes and all that. I think it would be amazing. A reboot like that I think would really get people’s juices flowing."

Uh, let’s stick to what we know, guys: we saw what “technological advancements” did for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in the 2014 and 2016 movies starring Megan Fox, Will Arnett and Stephen Amell. No one wants that again.
