The Walking Dead: World Beyond is “the lead-up” to Rick Grimes movies

The Walking Dead: World Beyond star Annet Mahendru confirms that the series is “getting really close” to the Rick Grimes movies.

Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) left a gaping hole in our hearts when he took his final bow on The Walking Dead. But almost immediately after, we learned that we hadn’t seen the last of Rick Grimes; in fact, he would be returning his own series of movies! And that’s still pretty much all we know.

Rick was last seen in a helicopter bearing the three-ring symbol we’ve now come to associate with the CRM, aka Civic Republic Military. The CRM, a powerful multi-community force that no one wants to mess with, features on the new spinoff The Walking Dead: World Beyond, and we’ve been wondering if that show might reveal what became of him.

At the moment, the characters on World Beyond are heading to the CRM headquarters in New York. My theory is that the first season will end with a Rick Grimes cameo. At the very least, I think we’ll see some proof of his existence!

And the cast seems to back me up! Speaking with Comicbook.comWorld Beyond star Annet Mahendru (Huck) teased the connection we’ve been waiting for, all but confirming that it will happen:

"We’re the lead-up to the movies, so we’re going there. All the questions fans have had for, I don’t know, inherently a decade, right? Our show is the answers to that. So we are very much heading to CRM. I mean, that’s the helicopter… We’re getting really close, you know?"

How close are we, exactly? We have no idea, but we’re almost there. Production on the Rick Grimes movies has not yet begun. There isn’t a release date either — the pandemic has unsurprisingly set things back a bit — but we’re hoping to hear more soon.

In the meantime, World Beyond is proving itself worthy of The Walking Dead name. This week’s episode ended on a bloody cliffhanger and gave us some gruesome insight into Huck’s backstory. “[I]t’s just the beginning,” Mahendru said, “you have no idea.”

World Beyond definitely has caught our interest and with the last episode and the Rick Grimes connection, all eyes are on this series. Let’s hope it doesn’t disappoint!
