Jeffrey Dean Morgan sounds open to the idea of a Walking Dead spinoff all about Negan. And with AMC readying so many other spinoffs…

Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) has left a lasting (and traumatic) impression on The Walking Dead fans. And while he’s constantly horrified us with his actions, it’s hard to imagine the show ever existed without him.

The original Walking Dead show is officially ending, but the universe is expanding rapidly. There are already two spinoffs on the air, with another couple on the way, including one about the further adventures of Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Carol (Melissa McBride). With all that news in the air, fans can’t help but wonder: is there any hope for a Negan spinoff?

One fan took this question straight to the source, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan replied!

“I’d like to think no doors are closed. A great character with so many stories to tell.” It sounds like it could definitely happen, sooner or later!

But it’s a lot to commit yourself to playing a character for this long, and as Morgan says, there’s still quite a bit of material to get through on The Walking Dead first. Negan might even die on the show, which obviously would limit his spinoff potential. I’m still a little surprised that AMC announced the Carol-and-Daryl spinoff this early, since it basically gives away that they’ll survive the show’s upcoming eleventh and final season.

While the jury is out on a Negan spinoff, we do know that we’re going to get to know him a bit better in an upcoming episode of season 10, which has extended its run into early next year. Morgan’s real-life wife, Hilarie Burton, will play Negan’s wife Lucille, the woman for which he named his famous bat. Presumably, we’ll see her in a flashback.

I’m excited over the possibilities of this. Negan has a devastaing yet relatable backstory, and it should make for great TV.

And then maybe — just maybe — the episode will be successful enough for AMC to greenlight a full spinoff. We’ll see.
