7. Fantasy author Ty Franck once defended George R. R. Martin from a beard thief

One of the most ridiculous tales in Hibberd’s book comes during the chapter where the cast and crew recount the show’s jump in renown after Season 4. While doing conventions and signings to promote the series, author George R.R. Martin recounted one of his more…memorable encounters.

"At another signing, a guy asked if he could cut off a piece of my beard. I said no and resumed signing. The son of a bitch got a pair of scissors and snuck up around behind me and tried to get some of my hair. My assistant at the time, Ty Franck, who is half of the writing team James S.A. Corey, wrestled him and took the scissors away."

Yes, you read that right. There was a time when Ty Franck, one of the authors of The Expanse, literally wrestled away scissors from a beard thief who was hell bent on acquiring a piece of George R.R. Martin’s beard. Did the obsessive fan hope to steal some of the author’s power? Was he just really into beards? Did he…have a creepy collection of famous facial hair?

We’ll never know. But man is it an absurd scenario to visualize.
